Sales tax and exporting orders

Why sales tax on your store is yours to handle, the buyer's country on each order, and how to export your orders as a CSV for your bookkeeping.

On Minecraftstore.io you are the seller, so sales tax on your sales is yours to handle. This page explains what the dashboard gives you for that: the country of each buyer, and an export of your orders for your bookkeeper.

This page is general information, not tax advice. Tax rules depend on where you live and how you sell. Ask an accountant what applies to you.

Why the tax is yours

When a player buys a rank, the money goes to your own Stripe account. Minecraftstore.io does not sell to the player on your behalf. You are the seller of record, so:

  • you decide whether you need to charge VAT or sales tax;
  • you declare and pay it to the tax office;
  • you keep records of your sales.

Minecraftstore.io does not add tax to your prices and does not calculate it. The price you set for a product is what the player pays. If you owe VAT, it is part of that price.

The buyer's country

Stripe Checkout asks a player who pays by card for the country of their billing address. Minecraftstore.io keeps that country with every paid order.

You find it in two places:

  • on the order page, under Player, as Country;
  • in the Country column of the export, as a two-letter code like DE or NL.

The country can be empty when Stripe did not collect one for that payment.

Exporting your orders

  1. Open Orders in the menu.
  2. Click Export at the top right.
  3. Pick a period with From and To. The export starts on last month, the period a bookkeeper usually asks for.
  4. Click Download CSV.

What is in the export

The export has every order that was paid in the period. Orders that were refunded or charged back are included, with their status, so the file matches your Stripe payments. Orders that were never paid are left out.

The period counts in days of your store's timezone, by the moment of payment. The file opens as UTF-8 in Excel, so names with accents stay intact.

Column What it holds
Paid at Date and time of payment, in your store's timezone
Order The order number
Status The status of the order, like Delivered, Refunded or Charged back
Player The Minecraft name of the buyer
Email The email address the buyer gave at checkout
Country The two-letter country code of the buyer's billing address
Items The products in the order, with the quantity when more than one
Coupon The coupon code, if one was used
Currency The currency of the order
Subtotal The price of the items before a coupon
Discount What the coupon took off
Total What the player paid
Platform fee The fee of Minecraftstore.io
Payment fee Stripe's payment fee. Empty while it is not known yet
You receive The total, less both fees

Amounts are decimals with a dot, like 9.10, in the currency of the order. See Fees for how the fees are worked out.

VAT on digital sales in the EU, in short

Ranks and items in a game count as digital services for VAT in the EU. A few general rules, so you know what to ask your accountant:

  • Selling to consumers in other EU countries. For digital services, the VAT rate of the buyer's country applies, not yours. A player in Germany pays German VAT.
  • The €10,000 threshold. If your business is in the EU and your cross-border sales of these services to consumers in other EU countries stay under €10,000 a year in total, you can charge the VAT of your own country instead. Above that, the buyer's country counts.
  • One-Stop Shop (OSS). Instead of registering for VAT in every EU country, you can declare the VAT for all of them in one return in your own country, through the OSS.
  • Outside the EU. If your business is outside the EU and you sell to EU consumers, other rules apply, and other countries have their own sales tax rules too.

Whether any of this applies to you depends on your situation, for example whether you sell as a business and whether you are under a small business scheme in your country. The buyer's country on each order and the export are there so you or your accountant can work out what you owe.

Disputes and refunds in your records

Because you are the seller, refunds and chargebacks are yours too. The export shows them by their status. How they work is on Refunds and chargebacks.
