How to sell ranks on your Minecraft server

Ranks are what most servers sell first. Players want to support a server they love and show it in chat. This guide covers which ranks to offer, what to put in them, what to charge and how to set them up so you never hand one out by hand.

Three tiers, clearly apart

  • VIP

The cheap one players buy on a whim. A tag and colour in chat, an extra home, a kit with cosmetics.

  • MVP

Everything in VIP plus something visible: particles, a pet, a hat. Most players end up here.

  • Legend

For the players who want to support the most. More of the same, a unique tag, and a thank you in Discord.

What to put in a rank

Things that show who supports the server, not things that decide who wins.

  • Good perks

A chat tag and colour, nicknames, particles, pets, hats, an extra home or two, a bigger plot, access to a cosmetic kit, a coloured name on the tab list, priority in a full server queue.

  • Keep these out

Better weapons or armour, more damage, flying in survival worlds where it helps against others, and paid random rewards. They break Mojang's rules and drive free players away.

What to charge

Start low and add a tier, rather than starting high. A common ladder is VIP at €4.99, MVP at €9.99 and Legend at €19.99 for good, with a 30-day VIP around €2.99. Keep the cheapest rank cheap enough to buy without asking a parent; most first purchases are small, and a happy buyer upgrades later. Run a sale on your server's birthday or a holiday rather than lowering prices for good.

Set them up once

  1. 1

Make the groups in your permissions plugin

With LuckPerms: a group per rank, with its prefix and perks, and MVP inheriting VIP. See our LuckPerms guide for the commands.

  2. 2

    Add a product per rank

With the command that gives it, like lp user {player} parent add vip. It runs the moment a player pays, also when they are offline.

  3. 3

    Add a 30-day version

Turn on Lasts a limited time and add the command that takes it away. The store runs it within a minute of the end and mails the player before.

  4. 4

    Make the higher ranks upgrades

MVP upgrades from VIP, Legend from MVP. A player pays only the difference.

  5. 5

    Show a comparison table

One table under your ranks that shows what each has. It sells better than three long descriptions.

Where players find them

Players buy where they already are. Put the store link in your MOTD, your tab list and your Discord, and let them open it with /buy in the game. Give buyers a Discord role so others see who supports the server. And deliver right away: a rank that arrives seconds after paying gets talked about.

Questions

How many ranks should I sell?

Two or three. More tiers make players hesitate. Start with three and add one later if players ask for more.

Permanent or for a month?

Both. A permanent rank for players who know they stay, and a 30-day version at a lower price for players who want to try. The timed one often brings the same player back every month.

What if a player wants a higher rank later?

Make the higher rank an upgrade from the lower one. They pay only the difference, and an upgrade command takes the old rank away.

Is selling ranks allowed by Mojang?

Yes, as long as the perks do not give paying players an advantage over others. Read our guide on monetizing a server for the full rules.

Your players are already asking for a rank.

Give them a place to buy it. Your store is live in minutes, and it costs nothing until the first sale.
